The
Heseltine History |
|
Heseltines in all but
name . . .
The earliest direct relative I can yet find is seven generations back, my
Great Great Great Great Great Grandfather, Edward Hasletine, who was
probably born around 1725, and who was married to Anna Maria Burnett in St
George's Chapel, Hyde Park on 15th August 1750. However,
going back one generation
further still (the eighth), Anna Maria was the eldest daughter of Samuel
Burnett (b. abt 1702, d. 1740), and Bethia(h)
(bur. 30 April
1730).Edward and Bethia's children were three boys and two girls, but as was the
case in those days of heavy infant mortality, only two
of the boys survived, one boy and both girls
(both called bethia) dying in infancy. Edward, their second son of that name,
and born in 1752, has no children
that I can trace, but his younger brother
Samuel Richard Heseltine
(I),
(1759-1809), my GGGG Grandfather, was christened at St Martin's in
the Fields, married Mary Davis "of Pentonville" in St Bart's the Less in
1782, and when he died in 1809 at 207 Strand, London, his
will records that he was worth less than
£14,000.
Samuel Richard I and Mary
Davis had eight children between 1782 and
1798m - Edward, Anna Maria,
Samuel Richard II,
William, Mary Amelia, Thomas,
Elizabeth Hannah and Charles. Of these Anna Maria and Thomas died
young, and it has been easier to trace the families of the four other boys.
Edward (1782-1847) was christened in St Clement Danes, married
Sarah Norfor in 1809 in St Martin's in the Fields, and went on to have six
children. It was this branch of the family that
eventually produced Evelyn Heseltine and the composer
Peter Warlock
(Philip Heseltine).- more about them later!
GGG Grandfather Samuel Richard II (1786-1861), also
christened in St Clement Dane's, married Margaret (Martha) Langham in 1811
in the same church and together they had eleven children
- Martha, Mary, Elizabeth, Samuel, George, Edward (or Edmund),
John, James, Charlotte, Samuel and William.
Edward [or Edmund] Heseltine (b. 1821, chr. St Edmund's,
Newington) who had two boys and two girls, probably living in Clapton,
Essex, and the eighth was my GG Grandfather John Heseltine I.
William Heseltine (1787-1851), christened in St Clement Dane's,
married Anne Fuller in 1812 in the same church and went on to have four
sons and three daughters, most, but not all, christened in St Mary's
Church, Lambeth.
Charles Heseltine (1798-1876), also christened in St Clement
Dane's, married Evelina and lived and worked as a Custom's Inspector in
Antigua. They had two boys, both born in Bermuda, in 1830 and 1833.
GG Grandfather John Heseltine I (1823-1885) is recorded in the
1881 census as a member of the Stock Exchange, and was christened in St
Mary's Church, Newington, on 13th February 1826. He married Josephine
Magdalena Deschet, (who is recorded in the 1881 census as having been born in
Ireland,) in St Paul's Church, Covent Garden,
London, on 10th May1849. he died in
1885 in Clapton.
