The Family of Charles Thomas Macadam

Marianne Louisa Philips was born 21st December 1841 in Bishop's Stortford, Essex, and died 9th February  1921.

Marianne's parents were Edwin Phillips and Susan Patmore, and she was the second child of three. Her elder sister, Elizabeth Susan Phillips, was christened on 27th October 1835, and her brother Thomas Edwin Phillips on 22nd June 1847. They were all christened at St Michael's Church, Bishop's Stortford.

Charles Thomas and Marianne Louisa were married 0n 17th October 1865 at St Peter's Church, de Beauvoir Square, Southgate Road, Islington, Middlesex.

Their marriage certificate describes him as a Secretary, living in Lewisham, Kent, and in which her name is Mariann (sic). Her birth certificate spells it Mariane.

when he was aged  50/51,  Elma Alexandra Laming (my Grandmother, and her second marriage) on 8th October 1907, at St Mary's Church, Kippington, Sevenoaks, Kent.

Elma had been born in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on 11th July 1844, and died in Hindhead, Surrey in about 1967.

There was no issue from this marriage, but my father Miles Frederick Ledger, her son by her former marriage to Frederick John Ledger (who previously was F J Heseltine, having taken his step-father's name)  took the new family name, and also that of his mother,  upon this second marriage, becoming Miles Frederick Laming Macadam.

Miles had been born on 8th March 1909, a few months before Evelyn, and the combined family of four (Cheveley, Elma, Miles and Evelyn) lived at Crowborough, in Sussex, for some years, and then at "Westwood", Lower Bourne, Farnham, Surrey, (now believed to be Westwood Country House B&B, Pinewood Drive at Lower Bourne)  until Cheveley, or "Grandpa Mac" as I knew him, died on 24th February 1952.

Miles married Eileen Muriel Dalby Hobson (b 26th June 1913, d       ) at St Nicholas Parish Church, Sevenoaks, Kent, on 2nd September 1939, having brought forward the date of the wedding by a fortnight to the day before WWII broke out, and almost immediately was called up to serve at Bletchley Park, using his knowledge of languages in decoding Luftwaffe messages, before being transferred to the Japanese section in Hut 10.
